Word of the week – anorak

My job is all about ‘words’ and making ‘words’ work in the copywriting and web content writing world.

So I thought I’d create a ‘word of the week’ blog spot focusing on ‘words ’that we just don’t seem to use much in our everyday language.

And then I’m going to try and use these ‘words’ as much as I can so they become part of my life.

This week’s word – ANORAK

I don’t think I’ve ever used this word in any of my copywriting projects. And yet it’s one of my favourite words, simply because it’s evolved so far from its original meaning.

Who would have guessed that an ‘inuit’ word from Alaska for a ‘protective item of clothing’ would have become one of the best ways in the English language to describe someone who’s a bit of a ‘geek’.  I love it!

What does it mean to me?:

  • a ‘sensible’ piece of clothing
  • an inoffensive way of describing an ‘enthusiast’
  • a ‘geek’

What does it mean to you?

NEW: Electoral Commission says Brexit Party must confirm identity of donors..or return cash. Big big problem for Farage because they literally didn’t ask for donor ID or location

So this is not scientific at all. But in a couple of hours there have been more than 2000 replies and overwhelmingly they say @RoryStewartUK won the #C4Debate https://t.co/BBXQeKSp5w
